Week 3: Intro to Photoshop

Our 12 students were thrilled to get on the computers for the first time this week and begin learning Photoshop Elements! We combined the AYV class with our Art Class and worked on self-portraits in the style of Chuck Close.

During the previous week the girls took self-portraits and Katie introduced them to Chuck Close’s techniques. After downloading the Adobe programs that were given to us by the Adobe Foundation, we then uploaded the girls’ self-portraits and divided them into teams of 2. The girls were then instructed on how to crop their photos into 9 sections and save them for the next step in our project.

While half of our class worked in the computer lab, the other half received an overview of storyboarding. Using stories that they had created in an earlier class, we introduced them to story planning and discussed what makes a story and its parts: the Beginning, Middle, and End, as well as conflict and action. They all accomplished finishing one illustration for their stories during this part of our class.

Next week we will do more storyboarding and begin brainstorming for our group project!  Stay tuned here for more updates!

Check out the following video from our class! It is low-tech since we used an old digital camera and edited 20 second mini-videos…but we hope you enjoy it!
